In case you didn’t notice last year (because our family was busy acclimating to Silverton), our family LOVES summer – Vacation Bible School, 4th (or 3rd as the case may be) of July, swimming lessons, Church Camp, our community festivals, and parades! I love both the excitement that it generates in our church and community and the opportunity to put a pause on the typical “business” of the church and focus on evangelism. Yes, you heard that right. I said the E-word.
I think 100% of my job as your pastor is reminding people that God loves them despite the ways that the sinful systemic systems of world and their own sinfulness have separated them from God. Nothing separates us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. That is evangelism in a nutshell. That is why I make it a point as your pastor to be present, active and visible at VBS, community festivals, church camp, concerts, and other activities throughout the year.
I see my presence and activity in our community as an extension of our congregational life – reminding people that people don’t have to worry about whether they are sufficiently righteous enough to deserve God’s love. It is my opportunity to let the rubber hit the road so to speak. When I am more excited about my faith; when I help people love Jesus more; when I am more active in the community; when I share my faith with others; when I love God; when I love people; when I make sure people know why I’m doing all these things – as an extension of my faith – I am extending the good news to all people around me! I am being an evangelist!
And YOU can too! I am so thankful that my family are (mostly) agreeable to join me on my journey! Join us!
Thank YOU VBS Volunteers!
We love the passion for it that builds in our hearts leading up to Vacation Bible School. We love the fun and craziness and chaos that comes along with the week of VBS. And we are soooo glad when Vacation Bible School is over and we can thank all the wonderful people who helped! Thank you! From food preparation and distribution, to craft preparation and distribution, financing the whole effort so children can come for free, and hours of volunteer hours – THANK YOU!
Thank you for investing in our ministry with children! We appreciated you spending your valuable time this week helping to foster faith in the children in our community in real and tangible ways. Thank you so much for everyone’s gift of time, faith sharing, grace, and love. I really appreciate it! ~ Pastor Laura & Jill
First Friday Concert Series
The First Friday Concert Series continues every month in our sanctuary! On July 5, we will hear the Indomitable String Quartet, with violinists Stephanie Barth and Michelle Reed, violist Juana Lopez-Duran, and cellist Tommy Leinonen, playing a program of music composed by Christopher Wicks. On August 2, Debra Huddleston’s ensemble “Trio Demika” will return for its third appearance in the series.
Unfortunately, our originally scheduled performer for September, Stephanie Barth, has had to withdraw due to upcoming shoulder surgery (prayers are appreciated; she plans to return next year). In her place, on September 6, an eclectic ensemble including soprano Aimee Amend, mezzo Ellen Yager, violinist Dolores D’Aigle, and cellist Katherine Parks will play music by Bach, Beethoven and more.
All concerts take place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the Sanctuary of Silverton United Methodist Church. While the concert series is free, donations are gladly accepted and go toward the musicians. For more information call 503-873-3461.
