Pastor’s Message

Dear Friends,

One of the refrains that has been playing again and again in my heart as I have been preparing for Advent and Christmas this year is the beginning phrases from the “Canticle of the Turning.”

“My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the
God of my heart is great, And my spirit sings of the
wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait.”

Big and glossy and loud and fast – that’s how this bent-up world turns. But God, when God comes – God shows up in this small little fetal ball. God, who carved the edges of the cosmos.

The heavens aren’t even large enough to contain God, and yet God came to earth to be held in a young mothers arms. The mystery of God – so large – becomes a Baby so small, and infinite God becomes infant. The great giver, becomes the Gift, this quiet offering.

This heart, beating in the chest of a held child, a thrumming heart beating hope, beating peace, beating joy, beating love, beating the singular song each of us has been waiting for – that the whole dizzy world has been spinning around waiting for.

The gift unwraps with Christ’s family tree: John crying out in the wilderness, a mother who cries for the world, a stepfather who is tenuous in his agreement, and  those who are wandering and wondering and wounded and worn out. God claims all of us. In Christ, God comes right to our own family tree and looks at it saying, “I am your God, I am one of you, and I’ll be the Gift your heart has been yearning for.”

The gift continues as we wander through this time of Advent, this time of coming. Join our church family this season on a journey of unwrapping the full heart song Christmas.

There is so much going on at our church and at our partnership church this season! Please make sure to hold each other gently in the midst of the busyness of the season. I’ll see you at church!
